One of a kind

Today at soccer practice Joseph was being ..... well, Joseph and one of the kids on his team sneered at him and said "Why do you act so weird?"

Without missing a beat Joseph smiled and hopped from foot to foot and said "I act this way because I am showcasing my talent which, as you know, is being goofy."

Dear world,
Please be gentle with my sweet and special boy. He deserves it. And please be patient with him as we help him learn to fit in without blending in.

Can we ditto that for all the kids who march to their own drummers? What a great post.

Gut punch.

Been there, done that.

My independent little gal has weathered it WAY better than I thought she would. Now if we can just survive boys' discovery of her cute little self.

Now that is precious! You go, Joe!

I just "found" your blog today. I was tickled to see J has a blog also. I blame the two of you for not having finished my laundry ;)

My Chicken deals with the same crap, but I'm not sure if he has such awesome come-backs. It's amazing how cruel kids can be at such a young age. Gee, I wonder where they get it?

What a cool kid...you know, in the anti-cool sort of way that I am totally aware of now that I'm almost 40.

What a fantastic response. I wish I had that kind of wit when I was his age. :-)

charming driver - We should get them together. You don't mind driving to MN for a playdate do you?

wheelsonthebus - Yes! I wish the world was more gentle with all kids who march to the beat of their own drummer. They're often the most intersting and fun kids once you get to know them.

laggin - I'm always amazed that when this sort of thing happens it just sort of seems to roll of Joseph's back. I'm always the one nearly in tears.

laundress - I do too. He's kinda neat.

ame i - Hey! I blame my blog for me not getting my laundry done too! I"m glad I"m not alone.

sam - You should have seen this kid's mom. She and two other moms spent the entire practice ignoring their kids and trying to one up each other with stories about how much money they spend on their summer vacations. It was gross. My boy may be "weird" but at least he has a mom who gives half a crap about him.

womaninawindow - He is cool. And yeah, it's in the anti-cool way. Now that I'm a grown up (ha!) I think anti-cool is the real cool.

tink - He's a nut. He's always got some kind of crazy comeback no matter what anyone says to him.

What a great retort. Yay for self confidence!

That's the thing about being Aspie, they don't know/observe what is normal so they don't know it's not normal to have someone call you not normal.

There's something about this comment--it's not normal. *snort
